NRL SuperCoach weather report round 4

I can see clearly now the rain has gone, I can see all obstacles in my way! Round 3 of the NRL was expected to be another washout, but the Weather Gods were kind and rain was either absent or pretty minimal.

This week it’s looking like we may have another week of footy that is relatively free of rain, with the main exception being Thursday night’s clash between Roosters and Broncos.

The wet weather can have a huge impact on an NRL game and SuperCoach points as a result.

Thankfully the weather report is here to help SuperCoaches prepare for the weekend ahead, to rethink their captaincy and bench choices to get their highest possible score. Now, let’s see what the weather gods have in store for us in Round 4.

ROOSTERS VS BRONCOS

Date and time: Thursday 4th April 8:05pm AEDT

Location: Sydney Cricket Ground, Moore Park

Conditions: Partly cloudy. 21 degrees, 50-60% chance of rain

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

Expect some showers to kick off Round 4, with a pretty strong chance of rain in the Roosters vs Broncos clash, a shame given it has potential to be a high scoring game. Rain was expected throughout the day as well, so the pitch will likely be pretty damp regardless of whether it rains during play or not.

The rain affected games have generally produced pretty poor SuperCoach output, especially for backs. In this match I would probably avoid captaining any players, but you may still consider vice-captaining someone like James Tedesco, but you’ll need to manage your expectations for players in this game.

Winner Prediction: Both sides have decent attacking options, but given the predicted rain I think the Roosters have the better forward pack and kicking game to grind out a win. Roosters by 4 points.

WARRIORS VS TITANS

Date and time: Friday 5th April 6pm AEDT

Location: Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland

Conditions: Mostly sunny, 19 degrees, with a very low chance of rain.

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

Near perfect conditions expected in Auckland, which could make for a very high scoring game, especially considering the match up! A dry surface and clear skies makes for good attacking footy, which hopefully means more SuperCoach points scored. The Titans defence has been leaking points in 2019, so Warriors players are looking very enticing in this match-up, and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is a decent VC option.

Winner prediction:

With great weather predicted in this one, it’s very hard to give the Titans any chance, and the Warriors should be too good here. Warriors by 12 points.

PANTHERS VS TIGERS

Date and time: Friday 5th April 8:05pm AEDT

Location: Panthers Stadium, Penrith

Conditions: 20 degrees, 50% chance of rain in the afternoon

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

While there is a medium chance of rain in this game, it is mostly expected in the afternoon and should be cleared up in time for kick-off! While the surface could still be wet during play, points should still be scored in this battle of the west. Neither side has really been clicking so far in 2019, so I would probably avoid this for captaincy unless you are a Robbie Farah owner and are willing to take a risk. Fingers crossed the wet pitch doesn’t contribute to any injuries, as Viliame Kikau returns from an MCL injury this week.

Winner prediction:

This is a hard one to pick, but given it’s a home game, I think the Panthers are due for a win … but this one could go either way. Panthers by 2 points.

SEA EAGLES VS RABBITOHS

Date and time: Saturday 6th April 3pm AEDT

Location: Lottoland, Brookvale

Conditions: Mostly Sunny. 24 degrees, very low chance of rain.

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

Another game with near perfect weather, and with a number of great SuperCoach players on display, expect plenty of points scored! With the exception of last week, Manly have looked pretty terrible defensively and so pretty much all Rabbitohs players look very enticing. But the Sea Eagles looked like a completely different team last week, with Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic on fire and return of Tom Trbojevic, and could surprise us. This looks to be a high scoring match regardless of who wins, with a number of great captaincy options, with either Trbojevic brother, DCE, Taupau or pretty much ANY South Sydney gun.

Winner prediction:

On paper Souths should get a strong win here, but Manly’s stunning performance last week gives me some hope. The Manly fan in me says it’s a coin flip, but the realist in me says it will be the Rabbitohs in a high scoring match. Souths by 6 points.

COWBOYS VS RAIDERS

Date and time: Saturday 6th April 5:30pm AEDT

Location: 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville

Conditions: Cloudy, 27 degrees, 20-30% chance of rain

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

There is a slight chance of rain around Townsville on Saturday but thankfully most of the wet weather is expected hours before and after the game! This one has the potential to be a cracking game of footy, with plenty of points scored if the rain stays away. There aren’t too many great captaincy options in this game, however John Bateman could come into consideration after his awesome start to the season. If you aren’t sure whether to start or reserve someone like Charnze Nicholl-Klokstad, worry not and lock them in!

Winner prediction:

While this feels like another coin-flip game, Cowboys defence has been a bit off to start 2019 and I think the Raiders could be too much if they can play for the whole 80 minutes. Raiders by 6 points.

EELS VS SHARKS

Date and time: Saturday 6th April 7:35pm AEDT

Location: ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park

Conditions: Mostly sunny, Low chance of rain, 23 degrees, light winds.

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

Another game with near perfect conditions predicted, which could make for a high scoring game. The Eels have been the surprise packets of 2018, while the Sharks thrashed the Cowboys last week, so there is potential for a high scoring game here, which is great for SuperCoach.

Shaun Johnson had his best game of the season last week, so we could see a strong performance from him in the sun, while Andrew Fifita is always a safe option, but I think I’d avoid this match-up for captaincy. I think Eels players are still a bit too unpredictable to risk putting the orange armband on at the moment.

Winner prediction:

Another coin flip game here, and while Parramatta are a tempting pick, I’m still not sure I can trust them yet. Sharks by 2 points.

STORM VS BULLDOGS

Date and time: Sunday 7th April 4:05pm AEDT

Location: AAMI Park, Melbourne

Conditions: 24 degrees, partly cloudy, low chance of rain, medium winds

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

Even Melbourne is predicting good weather this week, which should mean better SuperCoach points in this game, even if it is mostly one-sided. While rain is not expected, there may be some strong winds around which could play a role in this game. Bulldogs have won just 1 game this season and still have the worst defence in the league, so I think this is a very good match up for the undefeated Storm who are at the top of the ladder.

Winner prediction:

It’s really hard to give the dogs a chance in this one, especially after losing Kieran Foran to injury. In good conditions Storm should run away with this one. Storm by 16 points.

KNIGHTS VS DRAGONS

Date and time: Sunday 7th April 6:10pm AEDT

Location: McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle

Conditions: Mostly sunny, 24 degrees, low chance of rain

How it will affect the game and SuperCoach:

The near perfect weather is expected to continue in Newcastle this week, with Knights vs Dragons shaping up as another potentially high scoring game. Kalyn Ponga is back to fullback and the Dragons spine should be a bit more settled, despite losing Gareth Widdop to injury.

The good conditions should open this game up for free flowing rugby league and hopefully some great SuperCoach scores. While 2019 has been poor for Ponga so far, I think we can expect to see Ponga back at his best and he is a risky, but high upside captaincy option in predicted good weather.

Winner prediction:

Newcastle have ditched the Kalyn Ponga five-eighth experiment and I think it will pay off for them, but Dragons won’t go down without a fight. Knights by 2 in a high scoring game.
